It’s no secret that I’m not a fan of auto racing. Yes, I’m a hater, and I’ll throw out every overused cliché there is to describe my hate (Neckcar! Cars Turning Left!). That being said, I’ve always admired NASCAR for being a very well run organization. They take their roadshow across the country 10 months out of the year, and never fail to pack the place. They take their image seriously, and know just how to finagle punishments with their racers without souring the fans. The amount of devotion that befalls NASCAR is second only to the NFL.
That all being said, what business is this?
After trying for nearly five hours to get the two-mile oval at Auto Club Speedway dry, NASCAR called it a day, postponing the completion of the Sprint Cup series Auto Club 500 until Monday at 10 a.m. local time.
The drivers had completed 87 of the scheduled 250 laps when a heavy downpour caused the third delay of the day.
To give you an idea, “local time” is Pacific time. That means they finally called the race at 2 a.m. here in God’s Chosen Time Zone. As the guy live-blogging it on CBSsports.com put it, the race lasted longer than the Oscars.
Not only is this a big pain-in-the-ass for me (since we carry NASCAR at the station, I’ve got to now make plans to carry the delayed race on our sister station), but talk about forgetting the fans. If they actually tried to restart that race at 10 a.m./2 a.m., considering they were on lap 88 of a 250 lap race, what time does this thing finish? Who’ll be awake to see their favorite driver cross the line? Even on PST, that race isn’t done until Midnight. And you know Cops is on at that time.
