Shag on Sports Oh no. Not Again.

I think I’ll carry this through the playoffs. Of course, I’m saying that only because A) This week will probably be shitty, what with the sitting of starters and all that, and B) These picks have been an easy 2 posts a week.

  • Detroit @ Green Bay (-4) - Take a drink every time the words “Brett Favre” and “retire” are spoken in the same sentence.
  •  San Fransisco at Cleveland (-10) - I actually think San Fran has a chance to win this, only because the game means jack squat. But, leave it to Cleveland to bring out their Sunday Best for absolutely no reason.
  • Pittsburgh (-3.5) @ Baltimore - Old Browns don’t stand a chance.

… and because it means so much:

  • Tenenssee @ Indianapolis (+6) - Yeah, Tennessee will probably win this one and knock Cleveland out of the postseason. But Jim Sorgi isn’t that bad!

25-26-3 isn’t too bad for the regular season,  I think. Better payout than I had playing Blackjack.

My fellow “Matt” over at The Futon Report has picked a fight with the Detroit Free Press’s characterization of last night’s Motor City Bowl. Namely, that the close game was bad for the Big 10:

I can’t see how this win is bad for the Big Ten. A team that went 3-5 in the Big Ten — a four-way tie for seventh — played the Mid-American’s champion, who went 6-1 in their own conference. History dictates this is a “fair fight” in a bowl game, and I can’t argue with that label. After a few years removed from bringing a Big Ten school to the Motor City Bowl, the David v. Goliath battle was back in Detroit, and the Big Ten won. And the Big Ten won. This hurt the Mid-American Conference’s credibility.

No argument here, Suss. Here’s the rest.

As I did a little New Year Cleaning out of some of my crap, I started to throw away my trusty copy of Phil Steele’s College Football book. I don’t buy into the predictions, but he does do a lot of work with all of the schedules, the recent history of the teams, etc. etc. etc.

But on the front few pages are his Bowl Predictions. I don’t know why you would even TRY to predict this stuff (save the BCS bowls), but he went through every last one. Well now that everything is all set (and some of the games are already in the books), lets see how Mr. Steele did:

While looking around for a listing of college bowl Tie-Ins (Because, I’ll Admit, I don’t know the exact tie-ins for the Alamo Bowl), I came across this list of headlines along the side of one page:

BCS Headlines

Wow… that’s really… loaded. Of course, I didn’t realize until after the fact what page I was actually reading…

Ah. Gotcha. Anyways, the project I’m working on will probably be up by Wednesday (since I’ll be out all day today and tomorrow), so for now, have a Merry Christmas and all that jazz.

I’ll admit, I didn’t get to watch a whole lot of football yesterday (holidays and all that), but I did catch the Cleveland and Cincinnati Borefest. Bah humbug to that.

  • Kansas City @ Detroit (-4.5) - It’s a really simple gameplan. Run the ball, win games.
  • Cleveland (-2.5) @ Cincinnati - Palmer looked bad, Anderson looked worse. 4 picks?! I think the Browns were dangerously close to putting him in.
  • Miami (+22) @ New England - And congrats to the Dolphins for clinching the first pick of the 2008 NFL Draft By the vy, San Fransisco won, which means the Patriots first round pick is slipping a bit. Thankfully.
  • Washington @ Minnesota (-6.5) - It’s a really simple gameplan. Stop the run, win games.

That wholly unremarkable performance leaves me 25-26-3.
